It is instructional to look back in time at how companies have evolved with the CSO role. A report about the state of the sustainability profession in 2016 noted that the number of companies with a designated CSO had increased from 29 to 36 between 2011 and 2014. However, this data is misleading; it does not include the many companies where the sustainability leadership role is tacked on to that of an existing corporate officer, often a vice president. As noted above, many vice presidents of EHS also “own” sustainability. They may not be officially called the CSO; their title might be VP, EHS and Sustainability (or equivalent).xiii

A few examples of companies that have chosen to be highly visible in their approach to the CSO role are:

–Coca-Cola: The CEO announced in early 2017 that Bea Perez, previously vice president and CSO, will retain this role with broader responsibilities overseeing public affairs and communications. In this new role, Perez will leverage the important external stakeholder work done in public affairs and communications, sustainability and partnerships in a more strategic, integrated and holistic way.xiv

–Nike: Hannah Jones remained CSO when she was named vice president, sustainable business and innovation in 2012.xv
